Sangulí & Sustainability

We use two types of solar technologies. On the one hand, we have thermal solar panels, which harness the sun's energy to produce the heat from which we obtain sanitary hot water. On the other hand, we have photovoltaic solar panels that utilise the sun's radiation to produce electricity.

These installations are located at various points throughout the Camping & Resort, covering a total area of 2,730 m2.

The most recent installation is on the roof of the new sanitary facilities 4, built in 2022. It features 440 m2 of solar panels and generates an approximate annual saving of 60,000 kg of CO2.

There are other solar installations on the roofs of the Africa accommodations, the sanitary facilities 1, and the staff and operations building.

At Sangulí Salou, we have 3 of the most relevant ISO certifications, two of which are related to the environment and sustainability.

• UNE-EN ISO14001:2015 for environmental management systems through which we reduce the impact of our activities to ensure environmental protection.

• UNE-EN ISO50001:2018 for energy management systems that ensure responsible energy use during the course of our activities.

• UNE-EN ISO 9001:2015 for quality management systems, the application of which guarantees us the use of an effective system that helps us continually improve our customer satisfaction.

The sanitary facilities 4 and the La Mediterránea accommodations, both inaugurated in 2002, feature an eco-sustainable and avant-garde architectural design that leaves no one indifferent.

The wood used for their construction comes from sustainable forests that hold the prestigious FSC and PEFC certifications.

These certifications attest that the wood comes from responsibly managed forests.

We have adopted multiple and versatile strategies to make our energy use much more efficient. Here are just a few examples:

• Over 95% of our lights are LED and/or low consumption.
• The people who work at Sangulí Salou move around the Camping & Resort using zero-emission electric vehicles that are charged using energy from the photovoltaic panels.
• Our technical installations feature several control and saving systems that enable us to reduce gas, water, and electricity consumption.
• The air conditioning units have a thermostat lock system preventing temperatures from fluctuating outside the 19-27ºC range, set to ensure sustainable thermal comfort. 

At Sangulí Salou, we are committed to the 7 R's of the circular economy: redesign, reduce, reuse, repair, renew, recover, and recycle. To this end, we have adopted specific actions:

• We provide our guests with 19 selective collection points, to facilitate recycling during their stay.
• Internally, not only do we create magical moments for families, but we also recycle the waste resulting from our business activities.
• Before purchasing, we first think of repairing. We always aim to give a second life to what can be repaired, ensuring its full functionality. If it can't be repaired, we seek another use for it before discarding.
• As part of our contribution to the circular economy, we provide the furniture replaced during the renovation of accommodations for free to the people working in the company and charitable entities, thus giving them a second useful life.

In our shops and supermarkets, we also help customers reduce their environmental impact:

• In the fruit section, we provide our customers with compostable bags.
• The shopping bags from our supermarkets are made from over 70% recycled material and are, in turn, recyclable.
• Furthermore, we've made available reusable bags for our customers. They can use these during their stay and take them as a memento, knowing they're acquiring a product made in Spain, 100% recyclable and reusable, with 70% recycled material and harmless inks.
• In bakeries and cafés, customers can bring their own containers for take-away drinks if they wish.

At Sangulí, we coexist with over 70 varieties of plant species and at least 17 bird species. All of this makes the campsite a vibrant ecosystem! For this reason:

• We prioritize the use of biological agents for pest control.
• We've introduced diatomaceous earth as a natural eco-friendly insecticide. Formed from algal fossils, it's known for its repellent properties.
• We shred plant residues from pruning to use as mulch. Spread on the ground, it protects the soil and naturally returns nutrients to it.
• We have installed nesting boxes for native birds, which have been built in our carpentry workshop from wood scraps.
• We plant native plant species with low water requirements. Apart from water savings, they adapt better to the environment and don't introduce new pests from exotic locations.

The Camping & Resort Sangulí Salou covers an approximate area of 30 outdoor hectares, filled with lush vegetation and bustling human activity, which makes it very attractive for cats. Our way of caring for them and maintaining balance involves keeping the cat colony well-looked after and controlled.

• We have food and drink supply points where the cats visit daily. This ensures they are in good health and can coexist harmoniously with the visiting families.
• We run sterilisation campaigns to control the growth of the colony. Over the last eight years, we have sterilised more than 200 cats.
• Whenever required, the cats receive veterinary care. We provide them with the appropriate treatment, care for and monitor them until they recover and can return freely to their colony.
• We have a cat adoption programme. People working at the campsite, and the residing families can adopt after an evaluation of the adoption by the Quality and Environment team of Sangulí Salou.
• Since 2013, we have collaborated with a local animal welfare entity.

Our little ones are the future of the planet, which is why, during holidays, we don't forget to include sustainability and the natural environment in our educational leisure activities. As part of the Miniclub activity programme, we offer:

• Workshops on recycling and waste separation.
• Workshops about insects and their significance within the ecosystem.

• We are also committed to combating food waste, which is why we offer our customers the opportunity to take away any leftover food when they dine in our restaurants.
• As part of our social action policy, we have signed an agreement with the official confederation of charitable and social action entities (Cáritas), to whom we donate unprocessed food from our supermarkets, as well as toys, clothes, and other items in good condition left behind by our guests at the end of their stay.
